12 Cities 12 Conversations (A New World Church Conversation)
The world continues to change at an exponential rate. New paradigms, systemic challenges, urbanization, globalization, and technological advances have shaken the foundations of the way many view the world. What does this mean for the Church?
I’d like to introduce you to Lausanne. For many of you under the age of 40, you may not be familiar with this movement and global gathering. It was initiated by Billy Graham and other world leaders back in 1974. As stated on their website, the focus of Lausanne is to initiate and develop “a worldwide movement that mobilizes evangelical leaders to collaborate for world evangelization.” Lausanne will have its global gathering this year in Cape Town, South Africa (October 2010).
Here’s a quick video that describes the origins of Lausanne and its purpose:

In leading up to Lausanne’s gathering in Cape Town, South Africa, conversations are brewing in various countries including the United States. I’m honored to be a part of these conversations in the United States called “12 Cities 12 Conversations“. Here’s what drew me to Lausanne:
- The Global Nature of the Conversations: I appreciate the fact that Lausanne’s gathering is truly global. It is definitely not solely a US-based conversation. I’m intrigued by how others around the world are living out their faith through tangible expressions of love for this world.
- The Focus on Justice: I’m encouraged by Lausanne’s commitment to address and develop thoughts about what it means to connect proclamation with demonstration. Bringing these two worlds together would be a huge victory for the Church and its future. I want to contribute to this conversation.
- The Participation of New Voices: Lausanne is committed to platforming new voices (aka younger voices) of the global Church. Although I have not seen the list of participants, I have been reassured by those in leadership that younger voices are key to discussing the future of the Church. I hope this becomes a reality leading up to the gathering.
