A friend on twitter (@dennismuse) sent me a link to story MSNBC did this morning about “The New Face of Hunger”. I thought this piece rightly portrayed the growing number of working families that are seeking assistance is this uncertain economy. I hope you take a moment to watch this 5 minute piece and allow it to break down some stereotypes we may have towards those affected by hunger in our own country.

The following is a list of thoughts/ideas I have in regards to our response:

• For those of us who have shelter and food on the table, we must remain thankful for our provision.
• We, as individuals, organizations, churches, and businesses, must take intentional steps to become more involved with hunger issues both locally as well as globally. In these uncertain times, it is necessary for humanity to help one another. Generosity breeds mutual provision. Being aware and mindful of what is going on can produce multiple opportunities for serving our friends in need.
• Ask, Listen, and Learn – Connect with local organizations that already help people in these situations. Visit a local food bank and ask, listen, and learn about the issue as well as how you can help.
• My friend Mike Foster of the Junky Car Club often says “Live with less so we can give more.” Consider doing an inventory on your “stuff”. Maybe there are things we could give away for the sake of those who need it a lot more than we do.
• Consider participating in “A Trashcan Can Make a Difference“, an initiative of JustOne, that seeks to collect goods for worthy non-profits in our cities that work with the working poor and our friends on the streets.
